SITTA:THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE CAREFUL ON LAND DISTRIBUTION

Waziri wa Wizara ya Ushirikiano wa Afrika Mashariki, Samuel Sitta ameitahadharisha serikali na kuitaka kuacha kutoa maeneo makubwa kwa wawekezaji kwa ajili ya kupanda mimea itakayotumika kuzalisha mafuta ya magari na mitambo.

Alisema kwa kufanya hivyo kutawafanya wananchi wawe vibarua wa kudumu katika mashamba makubwa ya wawekezaji huku hatua hiyo ikiathiri upatikanaji wa chakula nchini.

Badala yake alitaka jua litumike kama nishati ya kuendeshea mitambo mbalimbali na kuongeza kwamba Watanzania wanahitaji chakula zaidi kuliko mafuta yatokanayo na mimea.

Minister for East African Cooperation Samuel Sitta revealed this in his speech at the opening of the Bio-energy and Food Security Conference organised by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

He said that formulation of a new policy required adequate research, underlining that production of bio-energy faced a number of challenges that need to be worked out. Sitta warned against growing bio-fuel products on vast lands without adequate research.

According to him, bio-energy production competes with food production and they don’t complement each other. “The challenge here is that how can the policy balance the bio-energy and food production,” he explained.

Sitta also cautioned that if precautions were not taken, production of bio-energy would turn villagers into laborers.

He challenged conference participants to come up with recommendations that would be useful to the government in formulating new bio-energy policy.
