Asalaam Alaykum,
I am a Tanzanian Muslim, and I have been following events in Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar. As a Muslim, I am trying to understand what exactly is it that the Muslims are demanding from the Union Government. I am writing to all those who are involved in this chaos of destruction and mistrust, to tell other Muslims and fellow Tanzanians what are their 'demands'? I hear complaints that Muslims have been treated unfairly, it is unclear to me as a Muslim what does this mean? It has been impossible for me and other Muslims who have been living together with people from different beliefs, in Tanzania and in foreign countries to get the detailed explanation of what is going on and why all this violence and destruction. I challenge you to give us a detailed list your demands; so that it is clear what the problem is. I take this opportunity to urge those Muslims who have any issues that they would like addressed by whatever institution to put them in writing for the public to understand. Otherwise this destruction of Churches and other property will be considered (and rightly so) to be a criminal act and will be handled as such. in Tanzania there are lots of Muslims who are very educated and tolerant. There are Muslim lawyers, doctors, judges, nurses, lecturers to mention a few. I am sure this intolerant group does not represent all the Muslims who have been working and living together with people of different beliefs all their lives. When a leader either political or religious is arrested by the police; (like any other individual in Tanzania) the channel to be followed is simple. Retain a lawyer who will assist in bail application. This is enshrined in Tanzanian laws. By destroying Churches and other property, this group of Muslims will be considered hooligans and whatever their demands are whether legitimate or not will not be listened. Unfortunately the destruction works negatively not in your favour. No body will listen after you destroy or kill. You give justification for the authorities to dismiss you as lawless group with no important agenda.
